Nasce nel 1935 in Bulgaria da una famiglia di industriali e si forma all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Sofia. Nel 1958 incontra Jeanne-Claude, con la quale nel 1961 intraprende un sodalizio artistico che dura fino alla morte di lei, nel 2009. Il loro primo intervento si svolge a Colonia, ma è con la creazione a Parigi di un muro di barili ostruenti rue Visconti che i due acquistano notorietà. L’operare di Christo è caratterizzato dal gesto dell’impacchettamento, che viene realizzato dapprima con oggetti fino a monumenti, edifici e paesaggi interi in un gioco enigmatico di presenza/assenza, unendo urbanistica e performance artistica nell’esaltazione del soggetto.
