Nasce ad Hartford, negli Stati Uniti nel 1928. L’artista è considerato uno dei massimi esponenti del concettuale, movimento nato negli Stati Uniti negli anni ’60, basato sul concetto per cui l’Idea è più importante della forma stessa dell’opera finale; l’artista ricerca nello spettatore un coinvolgimento di tipo mentale piuttosto che emozionale. Dopo gli studi alla Syracuse University di New York, ha affiancato alla sua ricerca un'intensa attività didattica presso il Museum of Modern Art di New York. Dagli anni Sessanta esplora la figura del Cubo, considerata dall’artista base di ogni funzione più complessa e passaggio alla terza dimensione. Negli anni ’70-’80 LeWitt si trasferisce in Italia a Spoleto e si dedica ai Wall Drawings, lavorando direttamente sulle pareti; a partire dagli anni Ottanta inizia la produzione dei Concrete Blocks o Complex Forms, strutture in legno bianco.
